Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole – both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals. This is party of the “Service” pillar of Freemasonry and is very much connected to the “Community Engagement” projects currently in progress.
From its earliest days, Freemasonry has been concerned with the care of orphans, the sick and the aged. This work continues today. In addition, large sums are given to national and local charities.
Masonic charity is exercised at every level: individual Lodges make gifts and give aid to their own communities and every Province also gives large sums of money to regional causes. Nationally, our efforts are channelled through four main charity organisations:
Masonic Charities
With the amalgamation of the four legacy charities in 2016 the Masonic Charitable Foundation – The Freemason’s Charity was born. By bringing all the charities under one umbrella there was a consolidation of management, administration and accountability. It also made it much easier to apply for grants and make donations as the decision on where the request sat was simplified.
Over the last 12 years, Essex Freemasons have donated over £1 Million per year to around 800+ local charities
